No one would hire me after I got pregnant at sixteen, but the sex industry did, and for 14 years I worked in it to raise my sons. After my daughter was born I changed careers and went to university, as a grandmother, to earn my credentials. I went on to doctoral research and wrote Storytelling as Medicine: A Memoir in Essays and “Navigating Being a Tall Black Woman in Hostile Environments” (ed. George J. Sefa Dei). I founded Grandma Knows Best to tell our own stories.
