New mural honours sex worker and activist from Montreal’s past
Funded by the Community Radio Fund of Canada, CKUT’s Local Journalism Initiative will publish local news stories from reporter Jules Bugiel.
In an alley just steps away from Fairmount and Parc, a new mural has gone up in honour of Maimie Pinzer.
In 1915, Pinzer launched The Montreal Mission for Friendless Girls. The mission gave sex workers a community, as well as a place to share information and resources.
The mural is collaboration between the Mile End Chavurah, a progressive Jewish community group, and Stella, a sex workers’ rights organization.
They’re celebrating Pinzer as a working class woman, and a Jewish Montrealer, who they say hasn’t been given her due.

Arabophonics: A live broadcast from Maktaba Bookstore
On May 31, 2025, Funky Revolutions went live from Maktaba bookshop for a special broadcast dubbed Arabophonics.
For this special broadcast, Stefan shared a mixtape that includes sounds from a recent cultural event at La Sala Rossa to support the Sudan Solidarity Collective, as well as material from the Make Fuzz Not War compilation released to support Doctors Without Borders work in Palestine and the Middle East Children’s Alliance.
Khalid also highlighted the Maktaba project, co-founded by artists Sundus Abdul Hadi and Yassin Alsalman. Meaning both “library” and “bookshop” in Arabic, Maktaba is an artist-run, deeply-rooted space invested in representation and culture.
CKUT Production Crew volunteers Harrison, Emily, and Firuza were welcomed into the space to set up the live broadcast from 2:00-4:00pm.

Older Women Live - An Oral History with Rose Marie Whalley
From A Piece of Chalk to the Microphone – A lookback at OWL’s 20 years at CKUT with Rose Marie Whalley!
On Saturday, 9 November 2024, a frisky yet sunny late morning in Montreal, I made my way down to the CKUT recording studio on the McGill University campus. I was waiting for Mrs. Rose Marie Whalley to arrive for our interview. Rose Marie is part of Older Women’s Live (OWL), who have been running a radio show on CKUT 90.3FM for a little over 20 years now, called Hersay: Older Women Live.
This interview is an oral history of Older Women Live, told through a casual and honest conversation with Rose Marie as she shares her perspective and experiences – about the show, the world, and life in general. It’s an insight into how the show has, over the years, built a bridge between one of today’s most marginalized communities; older women, and young people. It has created a space for their perspectives and knowledge to be shared, passed down, and for new conversations between generations to emerge.
This show is just one example of many that speak to the meaning and impact CKUT continues to have through its community-oriented programming and support.

We got a late start on the episode but we've updated the archive file accordingly. The first hour is the live show and the second hour is the playlist of all the song requests.
