Background

The African Nova Scotian Music Association (ANSMA) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the development, promotion and enhancement of African Nova Scotian Music locally, nationally and internationally. Since its inception, May of 1997 ANSMA has attracted more than 210 local musicians and music industry professionals as active association members.

ANSMA is the primary organization responsible for promoting all aspects of music industry development in the African Nova Scotian communities in Nova Scotia. Over the past 24 years, ANSMA has created a support system for musicians of all ages. Equally important, ANSMA has provided African Nova Scotian musicians with high profile industry networking opportunities; and most notably ANSMA has developed an infrastructure to facilitate access to music industry information and opportunities for African Nova Scotian Musicians.

In addition, ANSMA’s core business functions have uniquely positioned ANSMA to take leadership in the area of:(1)professional development of artists; (2)promoting the celebration of the cultural identity and contributions of African Nova Scotian musicians and (3)supporting cultural cohesion amongst Nova Scotians by strengthening relationships between African Nova Scotian musicians and other cultural music communities, e.g.-Gaelic, Mi’kmaq, Acadian and new immigrant communities.
