Caribbean-styled showcase to celebrate Team Canada heading to CARIFESTA XIV in Trinidad and Tobago Featured

A contingent of nearly 50 nationally recognized artists, arts administrators and their supporters will be hosting a special showcase prior to heading to Trinidad and Tobago for the 14th edition of CARIFESTA. The contingent is being managed by the Toronto-based, Canadian-Caribbean Arts Network (C-CAN).

The C-CAN CARIFESTA Preview and Send-Off Fundraiser is taking place at Tropicana Community Services located at 1385 Huntingwood Drive in Scarborough, Ontario. It will be on Sunday, August 11, 2019 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“The show is our way of thanking our sponsors and sharing a taste of what we will be presenting in Trinidad and Tobago,” said Rhoma Spencer, Artistic Director of C-CAN. “We are hoping for one last boost of support before we head off to represent Canada and bring our take on Caribbean culture to this truly international festival.”

CARIFESTA is the premium cultural event in the Caribbean and is held every two years. This year’s festival takes place in Trinidad and Tobago from August 16 to August 25. The C-CAN contingent will be the only one representing a non-Caribbean country. Canadian audiences are guaranteed to be entertained at the C-CAN CARIFESTA Preview and Send-Off Fundraiser. Performers include:

● Children and Youth Dance Theatre of Toronto
● Kalabash
● Roots and Branches Dance
● KasheDance
● Rhoma Spencer
● Daniel Ellis

“We are pleased that Canada is part of a festival that has historically been created and designed for countries of the wider Caribbean region”, said Michael G-A Lashley, Chef de Mission/Project Manager. “Two years ago, we participated at CARIFESTA in Barbados with great success. This year we have an even bigger group and we are expecting an enhanced international experience for our Canadian contingent.”

This year’s contingent will have an increased national scope with performers from Ontario and Alberta. The Melisizwe Brothers hail from Edmonton and add some significant star-power to the contingent. They show off their Canadian pride during their performances and they have been featured on the Ellen show, the Steve Harvey Show and Showtime at the Apollo.

“We are humbled to be part of a team of diverse Canadian artists of Caribbean descent and it’s a privilege to perform our Canadian realites in the spaces from which we have migrated,” said Kevin A. Ormsby, Artistic Director of KasheDance. “As artists who are passionate about our creations, we often need to depend on financial and moral support from the community to lift us up. We are grateful to our friends, family and fans for this special send off. We tekkin’ it home!”

About CARIFESTA:
The Caribbean's largest arts and cultural festival will be hosted in Trinidad and Tobago from August 16th to 25th. The Caribbean Festival of the Arts (CARIFESTA) is in its fourteenth edition and has spanned over two decades, as the responsibility for staging the festival is passed on to different countries within the region.

In years gone by, CARIFESTA has been a catalyst for strengthening regional integration among Caribbean countries, artisans and cultural practitioners. This wide ranging festival has therefore
been a launching pad for the Caribbean to take centre-stage, by bringing the essence of what makes the countries culturally rich to the world.
