Travel Makeup Bag Hacks: The 3 Makeup Essentials You Need When Traveling

Cottage season is still in full effect, with 4 weekends left to take a summer road trip and one more long weekend left in early September before we're back to school or work.

I traveled extensively earlier this summer to cover a black beauty event in Europe as a beauty blogger, and to host a beauty workshop. I was also traveling to visit friends and family in Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec City. And of course I didn’t want to look like a hot mess, especially not when I’m educating an audience about makeup! But because I was hopping around a lot, I didn’t want to carry too much stuff either.

So I came up with this #TravelMakeupBagHack, which is inspired by my BELLE Makeup System (click here for a refresher). The cool thing about this beauty system is that you only need a few products to start ― one product for each major step of the BELLE system (Brows, Eyes, and Lip Pencil/Lipstick).

You can add more products to your travel makeup bag if you need to (such as concealer, mascara, etc.). Though if you want to focus on the essentials, this #MakeupHack will show you the basics you need to look fly when travelling light!

Brows: As we’ve discussed in a previous Beauty Hacks article, filling in your eyebrows is important because your eyebrows frame your face and will give you an instant eye lift (click here for a refresher). My new favourite eyebrow #travelhack is Clinique Just Browsing Brush-On Styling Mousse in Black Brown ($$). This product is tiny ― no longer than a finger―, but it’s mighty: it will fill in your eyebrows with colour, hold your brow hairs in place AND the colour won’t smear when you sweat. Absolutely perfect when travelling light!

Eyes: You’re feeling fun, alive and adventurous when you’re travelling, right? So why not bring that sense of adventure to your TRAVEL makeup as well? Skip the usual smoky eye, the mascara or the usual dramatic black eyeliner for an instant pop of colour with an eyeliner pencil. I’m a big fan of the Annabelle Smoothie Eyeshadow Pencils ($), especially in the shades Acaidasiac (a gorgeous metallic teal) and Grapefull (a fun grape purple shade), which both look great against our Brown skin tones. These Annabelle eyeshadow pencils are affordable and the product is so smooooooth that the pencil will glide all over your lids effortlessly. For a more subtle, natural-looking colour, try the Annabelle Smoothie Eyeshadow Pencil in shade Cocoaloco ($) ― it’s the most perfect shade of metallic brown you will find at your local drugstore.

Lip Pencil and Lipstick: Skip the lip liner when you travel and stick to lipstick crayons or a tinted lip balm. Lipstick crayons can double as your lip pencil, and they are quicker and easier to apply ― even without a mirror sometimes! For our Brown skin tones, I highly recommend Rimmel London Lasting Finish Colour Rush Balm in The Redder, The Better ($), Clinique Chubby Stick Intense Moisturizing Lip Care Balm in Broadest Berry or Grandest Grape ($$), Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in the Sugar Fig Tinted, Sugar Cherry Tinted or Honey shades ($$), or NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Luxembourg or Palais Royal ($$$).

Bonus #BeautyHack: Try a makeup stick! Makeup sticks are awesome when travelling because they can multi-task: the same product can be used on the lips, the cheeks (and sometimes the eyes) to give you a fresh glow. For Brown and Black skin, I particularly love Clinique Chubby Stick Cheek Colour Balm in Plumped Up Peony ($$), The Body Shop Lip & Cheek Velvet Stick in 40 Red ($$), Smashbox LA Lights Blendable Lip & Cheek Colour in Venice Bronze Beach or Malibu Berry ($$$), NARS the Multiple in Na Pali Coast ($$$$) or Yves Saint Laurent Baby Doll Kiss & Blush Lips & Cheeks in 01 Fuschia Désinvolte ($$$$). Now, these multi-tasking sticks do tend to be pricier because they are two or three products in one, but if you are willing to shell out the bucks for them, they are absolutely worth it!
