Prokofiev’s Piano
Isata Kanneh-Mason + the Toronto Symphony Orchestra
Mar 22–24 at Roy Thomson Hall
“[Isata’s] rendition was characterized by patience above all else, a virtue often lost in the pressure of a performance. The piano took on the emotive quality of a singer as she gave each note the time and space it needed to fill the entire concert hall and reach the audience in its fullest beauty.”—The Harvard Crimson
Prokofiev’s demanding Third Piano Concerto showcases the blazing virtuosity of soloist Isata Kanneh-Mason, of the exceptionally musically talented Kanneh-Mason family, and triumph reigns over tragedy in Shostakovich’s turbulent Tenth Symphony led by guest conductor Ryan Bancroft.
Full of orchestral colour amid manic passages of virtuosity contrasted by moments of serene, lyrical melodies, Prokofiev’s Symphony No 3. is a favourite of Isata’s, and this is sure to translate to the stage: “it’s completely crazy and very rhythmic. That’s something I relate to, the patterns and precision,” Isata tells The Guardian UK in this interview leading up to her solo début at BBC Proms. We are thrilled to have Isata join your Toronto Symphony for her TSO début later this month.
