We have the tools to end the HIV epidemic. This idea has been at the forefront of our conversations about HIV for years. And yet, many communities are still not benefitting from these tools. Extending the benefits of HIV treatment, prevention and testing – equitably – requires a healthcare and social support system that is inclusive and representative of these communities, and understanding of their needs. This means engaging underserved communities in all parts of the HIV response, and following their lead in the development of strategies to implement these tools. Communities know themselves best.
Entrenched structural drivers of inequity, including racism, homophobia, sexism, transphobia, colonialism, drug use stigma and HIV stigma, still hinder these communities from leading the way to Canada’s 95-95-95 goals. Addressing these social determinants is part of the work of HIV prevention, testing, treatment and support, and we all have a role to play.
This World AIDS Day is a chance to engage your community in important conversations around HIV prevention, testing, treatment and stigma. Visit CATIE’s dedicated web page for free tools to help increase awareness about HIV in your community!
