February: Black History Month
ByBlacks.com proudly celebrates Black history all year round - nevertheless, Black History Month is an especially opportune time to educate and raise awareness on the innumerable contributions and rich heritage Black Canadians. This month we continue to honour the enduring legacy of historical and contemporary figures whose impact leaves an indelible mark on communities across the diaspora.
March - Women’s History Month
Women have historically pioneered events of positive change in a patriarchal society and continue to make monumental strides in the ongoing pursuit of gender equity across the globe. This month we acknowledge and celebrate the fierce, highly influential women whose work continues to inspire and empower future generations of Black leaders.
May - ByBlacks National Restaurant Week
ByBlacks Restaurant Week (BRW) is now an annual event and the ultimate foodie bliss. Spotlighting Black-owned Canadian restaurants, food trucks, pop-up restaurants, caterers, and chefs across the nation. BRW celebrates the authentic and delectable dishes of Afro-Caribbean and Fusion cuisine and provides the chance to sample meals at a discounted price.
June - Pride month
Pride month marks the celebration of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, acknowledging their history and amplifying the voices of Black Canadian activists who have been instrumental in the queer rights movement and advocating for liberation and inclusion.
August - Emancipation month
Emancipation Month commemorates the liberation of Black enslaved people in Canada and is a simultaneous reminder of the fight for freedom as we continue the important work of dismantling entrenched systems of oppression and demanding real, lasting change against anti-Black racism. ByBlacks continues to illuminate Black Canadian achievement and resistance.
The annual ByBlacks People’s Choice Awards nominations include a plethora of talented, Black Canadian creatives, professionals and personalities across dozens of categories. ByBlacks readers have the opportunity to nominate their favourite Black Canadian artist, book, business, film, and many more for a chance to win the coveted award.
The annual People’s Choice Award voting begins! From December 1-31, voters select finalists from a diverse and exceptional pool of Black Canadian artists, authors, businesses, filmmakers, and many other categories. Award recipients are announced on February 1st of the following year and receive plaques, and digital badges, among additional benefits.
