HAUI aka Howard J Davis
HAUI is a multidisciplinary artist who directs, designs, and devises cross-disciplinary work for stage, screen, and spectacle. He was the 2025 Artist-in-Residence at Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center, a Chalmers Arts Fellowship recipient, and winner of the Recent Graduate Award from Toronto Metropolitan University. As the youngest director in Canadian Opera Company history, he staged Aportia Chryptych: A Black Opera for Portia White, which won Best New Opera/Musical, and Outstanding Ensemble at the 2025 Dora Awards. Notable works include Aunt Harriet, Private Flowers, C'est Moi and MixedUp (OUTtv). His art “defies categorization, like the artist at its centre” (Stir Magazine) and “is going to allow a lot of people to begin healing” (Etalk Canada). His practice explores intersections of race, gender, and orientation, reclaiming erased histories by weaving mythology, memory, and music.
