AFRODELIK Celebrates 10 Years; Launches First Comic Book

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the AFRODELIK clothing brand, the brainchild of Toronto- based artist/designer Desiree Marshall.

AFRODELIK features an array of hand-drawn collections, which have gained an impressive following over the past decade. Known for its distinctive notion of pride and boldness, the clothing line features a collection of t-shirts, dresses, children’s wear, and more. To celebrate this amazing 10-year milestone, AFRODELIK is releasing a comic book based on the characters depicted in the AfroCity collection, entitled "AfroCity - The 21st Night of September: An AFRODELIK Tale".

Marshall created her first collection in 2007, and stated: "I created the AfroCity line to bring my imagined characters to life. It started with 'Miss Foxy', a no-nonsense, self-confident, gorgeous sista with a heart of gold. That led me to develop more characters: Rudy, then Kitty Jones, and before my eyes, the entire AfroCity neighbourhood had evolved."

When creating the characters, Marshall turned to that soulful 70s music for inspiration. Those inspired images emerged as part of her fashion collection. Says Marshall: "They were about pride, big afros, stylish clothes, soulful music, and funkiness".

It's that tie to all things soulful which clearly resonates with many fans of the clothing line; including celebrities Sherri Shepherd (comedian, and former host of The View), vocalist Erykah Badu, Olympic Athlete Rosey Edeh, actor Kristoff St John (of Young and The Restless), and author Nelson George, to name a few.

From that early start, Marshall dreamed of including a comic book series to accompany her clothing line. A decade later, The AfroCity Comic Series, Volume 1, entitled 'The 21st Night of September - an AFRODELIK Tale, was born. The comic book is available for purchase on the Afrodelik.com website and wherever AFRODELIK clothing is sold.

The comic book launch happens on May 11th at the new Different Booklist Cultural Centre, 7 pm to 9:30 pm. There will be live music and only 100 books on sale.
