This November, we had the honour of celebrating the remarkable contributions of Toronto's culinary talent at the first-ever Foodism ICON Awards. In an industry facing significant challenges—from rising costs to labour shortages—Toronto’s chefs, bartenders, and hospitality professionals continue to shine, showcasing resilience and creativity that inspire us all.
ByBlacks won the ICON award in the DEI category, highlighting the impact of our work with ByBlacks Restaurant Week, making it the first award for the food festival.
ByBlacks Restaurant Week has made a significant impact on the culinary landscape by promoting and supporting Black-owned restaurants, caterers, and food entrepreneurs across Canada. Our annual nationwide food festival raises awareness about the diverse offerings within the Black community, encouraging patrons to explore and experience the rich flavours and cultures represented in these establishments.
Through prix fixe menus and discounted specials, the initiative not only drives foot traffic to participating businesses but also fosters a sense of community and connection among diners. By highlighting the achievements and contributions of Black culinary talent, ByBlacks Restaurant Week plays a crucial role in celebrating and uplifting the vibrant tapestry of Canada's gastronomic scene.

The Foodism ICON Awards recognized the most talented and impactful individuals in the local hospitality scene across ten categories. Each award highlighted the incredible journeys of those who have shaped Toronto’s dynamic dining landscape. From innovative chefs pushing culinary boundaries to dedicated mixologists crafting unforgettable experiences, the evening was a testament to the grit and determination that define this vibrant community.
As a company founded on the principles of uplifting the Black community, ByBlacks.com has been at the forefront of showcasing Black-owned businesses and their contributions to Canadian society. Since our inception in 2013 by husband-and-wife duo Roger and Camille Dundas, we have aimed to highlight the everyday excellence of Black Canadians. Through our initiatives, including the annual ByBlacks Restaurant Week, we encourage support for Black-owned eateries, catering companies, and food entrepreneurs.
The week-long ByBlacks Restaurant Week celebration not only raises awareness but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the culinary talents within our community.
The next ByBlacks Restaurant Week will take place from May 12 - 18 2025.
We hope you'll join us in continuing to uplift and celebrate Black excellence in every corner of Canada. Stay tuned for more updates from ByBlacks as we spotlight the inspiring journeys within our community and encourage everyone to savour the flavours that tell our stories.
