When it comes to banking, it's important for Black Canadians to work with a financial institution that understands the unique experiences and needs of Black communities, especially when looking to build generational wealth.
According to Clifton Flushy, National Manager of Black Community Business Development at TD, now is an excellent time for Black Canadians to learn about the resources available to them as they look to move their financial journey forward.
An 18-year veteran at TD, Clifton started his career as an in-branch teller and has seen the need for unique programs designed to positively impact members of Black communities first-hand.
“At TD, we’re incredibly proud to support Black customers and Black-owned businesses in Canada as they strive to achieve the same goal all Canadians share –achieving financial goals and building wealth,” says Flushy. “Since 2011, TD has been actively engaged with Black communities across the country to find better ways to help them bank.”
TD’s support for Black Canadians as they continue to pursue greater wealth and financial success has been notable. Outside of the regular support provided to customers by the TD Black Customer Experience Team – established by the Bank in 2021, TD has also committed $10 million CAD over five years in support of the Black Opportunity Fund, and in 2023 the Bank announced the Black Entrepreneur Credit Access Program to assist Black business owners and entrepreneurs.
As more avenues continue to open for Black Canadians to grow their wealth, whether through investment opportunities or greater access to financial resources and tools, the need for tailored and thoughtful financial advice from specialists has never been more essential.

“Through the Black Customer Experience Strategy, we’re doing much more than simply acknowledging the unique banking needs of Black Canadians. We have an entire team ready and able to support this segment of Canadians with advice, tools, guidance, and programming that was specifically created to provide advantages and opportunities for Black communities in Canada.”
TD’s support of the community extends beyond financial advice. In 2020 alone, the Bank donated $12.1 million to anti-racism initiatives for Black-focused organizations, part of a larger $17.5 million effort. Internally, the ethos of representation runs deep, with the number of Black executives at TD doubling by the end of 2022.
As Flushy explains, part of creating a better financial future for yourself, your family, and your community is surrounding yourself with specialists that understand your unique financial needs.
“Even within Black communities that we belong to, the need for tailored financial advice and expertise remains the same. There is no one-size-fits-all approach, everyone is unique – but by leading with our expertise and passion for supporting Black Canadians, the TD Black Customer Experience Team can help bring your financial dreams to life.”
Flushy says visiting a TD branch and speaking to a personal banker or wealth advisor is the first step to getting Black Canadians to feel confident about their financial journey.
