“We envisioned this Restaurant Week back in 2016, but the timing was never right to launch it,” says Roger Dundas, Co-Founder and Publisher. “With all the challenges Black Canadian restaurateurs are experiencing during the pandemic, being able to only offer takeout and delivery options, the situation presented an incredible opportunity to increase traffic to (Black-owned) restaurants across Canada.”
The ByBlacks team has carefully curated food experiences for this week from Black restaurants in Ottawa, Montreal and across the GTA including Whitby, Mississauga, Brampton, and Toronto. New participants are being added daily.
"We are super excited to participate in ByBlacks restaurant week! We are 3 Black women running a restaurant. Sometimes there are a few more hurdles to get over than most, and that can make starting and/or running a business a bit more difficult. So we're thankful to see Black restaurants being highlighted and enjoyed by all cultures!", Nicky, Co-Owner of SugarKane Restaurant.
Restaurants will be offering curbside and/or delivery via apps such as Skip The Dishes and DoorDash, which are more popular with Black-owned restaurants. It’s expected that customers will use this week to sample cuisine from their respective hometowns.
BRW is being supported by Black Canadian membership organizations; Afro Canadian Business Network, Black Business and Professional Association, and the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce. Also supporting BRW are Black Foodie, Restaurants Canada, Canada Takeout and the new meal kit delivery service Carib Dish.
