Sponsored by the Black Opportunity Fund, You get the chance to try African, Caribbean and Fusion Cuisine in your respective cities

ByBlacks.com, in partnership with the Black Opportunity Fund, is pleased to announce the return of ByBlacks Restaurant Week, from May 15-21, 2023.

This national food celebration spans across Canada and features prix fixe selections from top Black-owned restaurants. Diners can expect discounts of ten to 25 per cent.

“We’re delighted to bring back Restaurant Week this Spring,” says ByBlacks founder and director Roger Dundas. “This movement is so much more than one week. This is a way for Black-owned restaurateurs and patrons to come together as a community. We all yearn for belonging and food is the best way to find it. Food is comfort, it’s joy, it’s home.”

This mammoth undertaking is more than just inviting people to go to their favourite eateries. Black community associations, tourism boards, the Black Opportunity Fund and many more partners all work in tandem to showcase the very best of African, Caribbean and fusion cuisine.

This years media sponsors include FEVA TV, Canada Takeout, Caribbean Vibrations TV, Cuisine Noir, Jump Podcast, The Caribbean Camera, and The Morning Vibe.

From Jamaica to Nigeria, the culinary visionaries joining Restaurant Week are ready to welcome a new generation of Canadians into their food culture. If injera sounds like Greek to you, it’s time to treat your palette to Ethiopian cuisine!

“We’re thrilled to support the spring edition of ByBlacks Restaurant Week and that we have such a great showing from Halifax this year,” says Clare Tidby, VP Marketing and Visitor Experience at Discover Halifax. “Our research consistently shows that visitors love our extraordinary food scene and this event will help us to continue to elevate and promote it on both a local and national stage.”

With so many food service businesses suffering the effects of staff shortages and the rise in food costs, just keeping the lights on can be about all small business owners can do. With Restaurant Week, the people who are the backbone of our local economies finally get their chance to shine. And it doesn’t hurt that customers get a generous discount, too!

“Black-owned restaurants like Brawta need support to stay open, to contribute to the fabric of diversity; this boosts the morale of the Black community and inspires others to want to own their own businesses, which certainly contributes to the economy!” says Christine Allen, owner and operator of Brawta Jamaican Jerk Joint in downtown Halifax.

Restaurant Week participants can be found in over 40 restaurants, from over 20 cities.

ByBlacks Restaurant Week is supported by Canadian membership organizations; Afro Canadian Business Network, Black Business Association of British Columbia, Black Business and Professional Association,Black Business Initiative, Black Opportunity Fund, Discover Halifax, and the Federation of African Canadian Economics.
