Participants hail from four provinces and over fifteen cities.

TORONTO, Ont. (October 17, 2023)- ByBlacks.com officially kicks off the promotions of its 2023 Fall Edition of ByBlacks Restaurant Week (BRW), happening November 20 - 26, 2023.

This national food celebration features prix fixe selections from top Black-owned restaurants, food trucks, caterers and ghost kitchens. Restaurant Week provides a one-week window for Canadians to try local Black-owned cuisine at a discount, anywhere from 10 to 25 percent.

Kicking off the marketing campaign in Vancouver, Nerissa Allen, co-founder of the Black Business Association of British Columbia says, “Statistics Canada's last report on "Sales in food services and drinking places" in April 2023, indicated BC was down 0.9% versus April 2022. This, after Covid-19 restrictions have lifted, employees have returned to work, and attendance at special events has resumed. It is important that we continue to support businesses in the restaurant industry to ensure they keep their doors open as we look to the future. Events such as ByBlacks Restaurant Week are key to introducing more people to cultural cuisine while supporting Black-owned businesses."

Through partnerships with destination marketing organizations, national Black community associations, Black-owned media, and food industry associations, the combined marketing reach exceeds over five million Canadians.

Media Sponsors include Canada Takeout, Caribbean Vibrations TV, Cuisine Noir, Jump Podcast, Shifter Magazine, The Dr. Vibe Show and Vibe 105.5 FM.

“Having dined at over three hundred Black-owned Canadian restaurants, we can see that there are real challenges for the food and hospitality industry,” says ByBlacks Co-founder and Publisher Roger Dundas. “BRW offers participating restaurants an opportunity to leverage our marketing machinery to generate more foot traffic and awareness of their establishments.”

With inflation still hovering over six per cent and food entrepreneurs still facing challenges with hiring staff who understand Black food, many restaurants have gone out of business.

“Calabash has served its food and cocktails to the community and has been a vessel for showcasing Black music and art for over 13 years. We are one of Vancouver’s few Black-owned venues that focuses on the African diaspora’s food and music. We need the community’s support so that we can continue to be part of the collective foundation for the Black community,” says David Cullin, owner and operator of Calabash Caribbean Bistro, in downtown Vancouver.

ByBlacks Restaurant Week is also supported by the following companies; Afro Canadian Business Network, Black Business Association of British Columbia, Black Business and Professional Association, Discover Halifax, Destination Vancouver, Federation of African Canadian Economics, Foodpreneur Lab, Ottawa Tourism, Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia, and Tre’Dish.
