This month, we’re listening to tracks by Nonso Amadi, Preston Pablo and TOBi. Apparently, we’re in a dancing mood.
Let us know what you’re listening to, and be sure to check out the tunes below.
“Ease Up” by Nonso Amadi
How did we rate it? BBBB Extremely Good
After a three-year hiatus, Canadian-based Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer Nonso Amadi is back and busy. From being named to the ‘VEVO DSCVR Artists to Watch 2023’ list to winning a SiriusXM Black Canadian Music Award with a few of his deserving peers, Amadi is blazing a trail with his Alte, Afro-R&B sounds. His recent release, “Ease Up,” is a polished, semi-political vibe discussing Nigerian government challenges, societal failures, and police harassment over sweet, beautiful African instrumentation with an R&B blend. Amadi’s spirit and delivery are ethereal and hit the spot. It’s a vibe you need to get into.
“Ay Ay Ay” by Preston Pablo
How did we rate it? BBBB Extremely Good
This is such a catchy tune. Hot off the reception of his Canadian Top 10 EDM single “Flowers Need Rain” with Montreal production team Banx & Ranx, Preston Pablo is back with “Ay Ay Ay.” Upon my first listen, the background church clap and repetitive, tuneful chorus swooped me up. Pablo says, "This song is the fantasized world built around my wildest desires. It's my materialistic idea of success being manifested through a song." Timing clocks in at two minutes and 20 seconds, making it a short pop track, but I guarantee this song will find it easy to garner radio play. With its sprinkle of R&B flavour, it's a fun ditty that will have you chair dancing, clapping and singing along from the top of your lungs in no time.
“Move” by TOBi (a live experience)
How did we rate it? BBBB Extremely Good
After seeing rapper and singer TOBi perform live at an event last summer, I’ve become a big fan of his work. While “Move” was released in 2022 from the Netflix movie Do Revenge, it’s a solid vibe we missed out on. TOBi recently released a live video experience of visuals that give the track an extra pop. The essence of his bandmate’s head nodding to each verse and TOBi’s tone and delivery combine for a stellar reintroduction to the track. The groove is undeniable, and the rhythmic segue into the instrumental break at the 2:56 mark is soulfully charged. If you’re not breaking out into a two-step by then, I have no words.
