ByBlacks.com was among 9 winners, emerging victorious in the Internet category, winning for its 2020 Allyship series.
This is the second award ByBlacks.com has received from CEMA, winning the Innovation award in 2017.
The “ALLYSHIP SERIES “ was unanimously acclaimed by the Canadian Ethnic Media Association’s judging panel as a significant journalistic undertaking and an example of journalism at its best as a societal change agent with a strong audience impact underscoring the critical role of ethnic media in Canada,” says Madeline Ziniak, chair of the Canadian Ethnic Media Association.
In her acceptance speech, Editor-in-chief Camille Dundas thanked each writer who contributed to the allyship series: Teneile Warren, Talia Leacock Tracy Peart and Byron Armstrong.
Check out all of their articles in the Allyship Series here:
I Don't Need You To See Me - I Need You To See White Supremacy, by Teneile Warren.
Hey Allies! You Have One Job: Accept Discomfort, by Talia Leacock.
Dear White People, I Can't Do Anything With Your Feelings, by Byron Armstrong.
“ByBlacks.com has been covering issues around race since we launched, but there was a definite shift after the killing of George Floyd. A lid was blown, and our frustrations spilled over. The articles in this series speak directly to white people about the work they need to do to help dismantle anti-Black racism. We’ve gotten feedback from our readers that these articles have helped kickstart difficult but necessary conversations with their white friends, colleagues, or family members,” says Dundas.
Dundas also thanked the organizers of CEMA for helping to amplify Black voices through this award.
