A 54 second video of the assault was posted to YouTube. One male is seen fighting the 17-year-old Black student in the schoolyard of Sutton District High School in Georgina, Ont. while onlookers film the attack and yell racial slurs including, “Pound that n------.”
At one point during the brawl, a voice off-camera is heard yelling, “You’re losing to the black kid,” and “F---ing get the n-----, get pounding.”
The four accused in the April 8 beating were suspended, but are now back at school. The victim’s father says no measures have been put in place to protect his son. He told the CBC, “What are they waiting for?” “For some other kid to be dead … is that what they want?”
Although hate-related charges cannot legally be laid against the youth, the Crown could decide to lay a hate crime charge against the 18-year-old student. This is the same school that made headlines last year when it had to ban students from wearing clothing with the confederate flag, after several of them showed up to school sporting the symbol, which has long been associated with racism.
