For section leaders, artists, DJs, and promoters alike, carnival season is big business. Blood, sweat, and tears literally accompany each and every year of carnival preparations for the professionals that make it what it is, and you truly can’t imagine a carnival season without the pillars of music, mas, and fetes.

When news broke last year that CBC was looking for “Canada’s Kerry Washington” to star in the new crime show Diggstown, the excitement about this historic role was palpable.

There may be slight variances in new film Maternal, but this is a tale as old as time.

Though she’s just officially started junior kindergarten, anyone who has met my four-year old could tell you she was ready for school long before now. A precocious, brilliant, friendly child who loves a challenge and thrives in new environments? She was made for school.

Summertime in Toronto is a special thing, largely due in part to the wealth of events that dot our social calendars on a near-weekly basis.

Parents navigating the school system with their children have a lot to think about. From academic performance to underpaid and overworked teachers to bullying, there’s much to consider—and for Black parents and children, that labour is multiplied.

At the start of each episode of Law & Order SVU, an ominous voice declares the following: "In the criminal justice system, sexually based offences are considered especially heinous."
