What To Know When Going Organic

What To Know When Going Organic

There are so many reasons to begin to introduce organic foods into our diets.

The first one being that there are so many unnecessary ingredients in the foods we buy from pesticides and herbicides to preservatives and additives to colorants and even straight up chemicals. These are things that have absolutely no need going into our bodies. Organic produce has been grown under strict regulations to make sure that they are without chemicals, pesticides and all of the other unnecessary and potentially harmful extras. Over time it has been proven that these "extras" can be harmful to our bodies causing a whole range of illness and disease. Granted, going organic isn't a golden ticket to a life free from sickness but it's a great start.

The one main reason I hear people choose not to buy organic is the cost. When living on a budget it is sometimes difficult to allocate money to organic produce. It is also baffling that it costs more for cleaner, natural, healthier food with less chemicals in them. As mentioned, there are strict rules and
regulations to produce organic foods, tests to be conducted and copious amounts of paperwork. All in all, the procedure itself costs more which is why we pay more.

Even still, the reasons to work towards an organic diet outweigh those not to. Rather than jump in and raid the nearest health food store (and maybe even your bank account) it is recommended that you do so gradually and follow these steps to make it a conscious transition of ease.

1) First things first, before you even think about picking up your wallet, know and believe that you are worth the investment. There is no more important place worth investing in. Your body and your health! The bodies and health of your family members! Think about it! We've had it topsy-turvy for so long!
What if we knew that we were worth making the change and committing to nourishing our bodies as best as we can? Take a couple of deep breaths (right now! Go on!) and know that you are worth the investment.

2) Before you reach for your car keys, before you grab your wallet, it's important to prioritize what is most important. Allow me to explain and make a few suggestions.

Switch your meats and animal products first
Followed by fresh produce
Then your grains

The biggest concern with non organic meat is the use of antibiotics and hormones, both are banned in organic meats. There is growing concern in regards to disease resistant antibiotics suggesting the possibility of the meat carrying diseases. Organic meats are also known to be healthier since there are restrictions on what organic animals are fed. Animals raised for organic meats are fed on grasses and natural feed. Their living conditions are also far more humane with having access to the outdoors, space and sunshine. They are also entitled to environments that facilitate low stress, good health and preventing diseases. All of the above makes for happier, healthier animals and meat. The same goes for meat products.

Buying organic produce is also important. Pesticides and chemicals are used of crops, another concern is the accumulation of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides being soaked up in the soil.

Washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly is not alway enough to rid the produce of toxic chemicals. Buying locally and buying from organic farmers drastically reduces your exposure to these harsh chemicals. Make a point to look for ethical, organic companies that are local to you. Not only are
you investing in your health, but buying from them also makes them stronger and more able to provide good quality, clean food to local communities.

Grains have been shown to have far less chemical in them and this is why they come in last on the list (with the exception of rice - chemicals are known to be used to keep the water from stagnating when growing rice). As you gradually move from non-organic to organic, keep this information in mind.

Also, cooking for ourselves is a great way of controlling what we put into our bodies. It has been shown to be therapeutic and relaxing which is always beneficial in our busy lives. It can also be a healthier way to eat.

I have a few more tips for you in the video below.

Till next time, be well.

Sending out love and light to you all.
